A quick google search on if Democracy is in retreat brings up a long list of articles, videos, and discussions over at least the past decade. The definitive source on freedom around the world, Freedom House's Freedom in the World Report, has shown an overall decline in democracy and its associated freedoms for the past sixteen years. As authoritarianism has taken hold in all regions of the world, it is important for people who value and cherish democracy to come together and nurture the conditions necessary for democracy to flourish.
The foremost condition for a strong democracy is a well informed and engaged citizenry. It also requires the constant struggle for improvement and a population committed to that improvement. When a country goes searching for easy answers in an all powerful leader, freedoms, democracy, and the future all fade.
Join the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire for our virtual discussion with the Research Manager for the Freedom in the World project at Freedom House to discuss the current state of democracy around the world. This event will kick off the inaugural William & Patricia Ayers Global Tipping Points series this fall. Attendees of this online event will gain a deeper understanding of why democracy is in decline and what steps need to be taken in order to reverse this trend. The United States' interests are better served in a world led by democracies that are willing to work together on common global issues.
